Zayteen olive oil bottles in three sizes

Which oil should you buy?

The honest difference between the two

Extra Virgin, the everyday bottle (Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,800)

From cultivated groves. Mild, golden-green and balanced, so it will not fight with your cooking. Safe to heat up to about 190°C, which covers almost all home cooking, sautéing, roasting, shallow frying. Available all year.

Buy this if you want one bottle that does everything, or you are replacing an imported supermarket oil.

Pure Wild, the strong one (Rs 2,500 to Rs 5,800)

From wild, unirrigated trees nobody planted. Deep green, bitter and peppery, with high polyphenol content. Do not cook with it, heat destroys exactly what you paid extra for. Use it raw: drizzled on food, with bread, or a spoonful in the morning.

Buy this if you already like strong olive oil, or you are taking it for health reasons rather than cooking.

Why does the wild one catch my throat?

That is oleocanthal, a polyphenol found in fresh olive oil. It is a sign of quality, not spoilage. Supermarket oils taste smooth mostly because the polyphenols have already broken down with age. If our wild oil makes you cough slightly on the first spoonful, it is doing what it should.

How is this different from imported olive oil?

Mainly age. An imported bottle is typically pressed abroad, shipped by sea, cleared through customs, warehoused and then shelved, often 9 to 14 months old by the time you buy it. Polyphenols and aroma degrade the whole time. Ours reaches you within weeks of pressing, with the date printed on the bottle.

Common questions →

★★★★★

Ordered Tuesday, delivered Friday in Islamabad, paid the courier at the door. The bottle had a pressing date on it, which I have never seen on any olive oil sold here.

★★★★☆

Wild oil is excellent but too strong for my kids, they refused the salad. Now I keep the wild for myself and use the extra virgin for family cooking. Worth knowing before ordering.

I have tried most imported brands available here. This holds its own against the mid-range Italian oils at a lower price, and the smell when you open it is completely different.

Why olive oil

What is actually in the bottle

Olive oil is roughly three quarters monounsaturated fat, plus vitamin E and polyphenols. These are the compounds nutrition research keeps coming back to.

~73%

Monounsaturated fat

Mostly oleic acid. The fat profile that put olive oil at the centre of Mediterranean diet research.

400–800

mg/kg polyphenols

In our wild oil, tested per batch. These antioxidants degrade with age, which is why a pressing date matters.

~2.5 mg

Vitamin E per spoon

A fat-soluble antioxidant. One tablespoon covers a meaningful share of a day's requirement.

0 additives

Nothing else added

Mechanically pressed, filtered through cotton, bottled. No solvents, no refining, no blending.

Figures are typical values and vary between batches and harvests. This is nutritional information, not medical advice, olive oil is a food, not a treatment for any condition. If you have a health condition, speak to your doctor.

How to use it

Four ways it earns its place in your kitchen

Both oils work at the table. Only the extra virgin belongs in a hot pan.

Fresh salad dressed with olive oil Raw

Salads & raita

A spoon over cucumber, tomato or a green salad. Add salt after the oil so it clings instead of drawing out water.

Either oil

Bread served with olive oil for dipping Raw

Bread & dips

Poured over hummus, baba ganoush or plain with naan. The honest test of any oil, nothing to hide behind.

Wild oil shines here

Grilled skewers with roasted vegetables Finishing

Grills & roasts

Brushed over boti, seekh kebab or roast vegetables once they are off the heat. The pepper sits well against char.

Add after cooking

Olive oil in a tasting glass Daily

A morning spoonful

One tablespoon of the wild oil, taken raw. How most of our repeat customers use it, expect the throat catch.

Wild oil only
